Amniocentesis is a diagnostic method where a doctor enters the womb with a needle to extract a sample of fetal DNA. It is usually performed significantly later than NIPT.

Diagnostic tests are standard and necessary procedure for confirming high-risk screening results. But NIPT by GenePlanet has the lowest rate of false positive results (when the test reports abnormality but the child is healthy) and the highest positive predictive value for Down syndrome.
